No trip to this stunning coastal region is complete without the iconic drive over Bixby Bridge in Big Sur, and perhaps a stop for lunch or a glass of wine at the famous Post Ranch Inn, set into a clifftop overlooking the Pacific.

San Simeon beaches are stunning – with a lovely pier and miles of easy walking, try W.R. Hearst Memorial State Beach. For a kite boarding and windsurfing hot spot, head to Arroyo Laguna, where the afternoon breeze can reach 40mph and dozens of colourful kites and riders can be seen flying across the ocean. Take a stroll around the seaside communities of Cambria, Morro Bay or Pismo Beach. In Cambria, head to the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, an extensive network of trails that follow the coastline and climb into serene pine forests 400 feet above the ocean.

Other great ways to spend your time would be to visit the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, head to the fascinating Hearst Castle or simply relax with a good book and a picnic enjoying the gorgeous surroundings.
