With more than 3 million acres of wilderness and public lands surrounding Mammoth Lakes, you can experience the serenity of nature anywhere your legs can take you! For quick and easy access to stunning mountain scenery, there is free public access to more than 140 miles of track that winds throughout Mammoth Lakes and into the expanse of the Inyo National Forest.

Mammoth Mountain’s Tamarack Cross Country Ski Centre offers free naturalist snowshoe tours throughout the year. Led by a U.S. Forest Service volunteer naturalist, these tours highlight the wonderful trees, plants, animals and geology in the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Tours are offered on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from mid-December to mid-April, weather permitting. Weekday tours are also available during the winter holiday season. These 1.5-hour tours leave from the Tamarack Cross Country Ski Centre at 10:30 am. Equipment isn’t included as part of the tour, but rentals are available there and from other shops in town.
