Contrary to popular belief, California cuisine is not all about the hamburgers, hotdogs, pizzas and cheesecake (although of course you are welcome to indulge!). It is a fantastic destination for foodies, with both diverse and creative options on offer all over the state. In northern California with wine country nearby, French, Italian and Mediterranean inspired food is prominent, as well as Asian-inspired fare. Centrally, fresh seafood is king and in southern California, there is a definite Mexican influence. Many chefs have a strong ‘farm to table’ ethos and you will find evidence of this as much in the small town cafes as in the glamorous city restaurants. There are some great food tours available in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and of course several significant wine-producing regions where you can taste and learn more about the legendary Californian wine industry.
